Philips får en Emmy-pris for sin lederrolle i udviklingen af widescreen-tv

Philips Wins Emmy Award for Lifelong Contribution to Development of Widescreen TV

New York, U.S.A., October 3, 2002 - Philips received the prestigious Technological/Engineering Emmy Award for its 'lifelong contribution' to the development and commercialization of widescreen television or 16:9 format. Mr. Lawrence J. Blanford, President and CEO of Philips Consumer Electronics, North America accepted the award at an official ceremony in New York.
"This award acknowledges the leadership role that Philips has played throughout the development of television broadcasting and reception, which has resulted in a constant stream of innovations," said Blanford. "Philips' long-term involvement in this development, and all the research work that has made it possible, reflects the company's commitment to meaningful, human-oriented innovations with the potential to improve people's lives."
"I am pleased that Philips is being recognized by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for its contribution to the development and continued education efforts of the 16:9 aspect ratio," said director Martin Scorsese, founder and president of The Film Foundation, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and protection of America's film heritage. "Viewing a widescreen film on a widescreen-formatted set allows viewers at home to watch movies the way the director intended them to be seen."
Today, widescreen TV is firmly placed at the high end of the TV market. Philips is by far market leader in Europe in the widescreen market where the market has developed rapidly. In 2001 more than 50% of digital rear projection TVs sold in the US were widescreen, and early 2002 figures indicate this is now nearly 70%. Digital direct view widescreen set sales are increasing steadily, and the vast majority of DVD movies are in the widescreen format. The superb picture performance quality, like sharpness and white uniformity of the widescreen Philips TV sets, is the result of a close cooperation with its key partner LG.Philips Displays.
The Emmy Awards are presented by the US National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) which is dedicated to the advancement of the arts and sciences of television and the promotion of creative leadership for artistic, educational and technical achievements within the television industry.
